IP65 vs. IP69 touch panels in food processing: when washdown-rated is non-negotiable

Food and beverage lines put operator terminals through daily sanitation. When an IP65 front panel is enough, when a full IP69 washdown unit with a stainless enclosure is required, and how to spec the terminal either way.

In food and beverage production, the operator terminal is not an office accessory — it logs batches, runs recipes, confirms ERP transactions, and fronts the SCADA system. It also lives in an environment defined by daily sanitation: moisture, cleaning chemicals, temperature shocks, and — in washdown zones — direct high-pressure hot-water jets.

Reading the IP ratings honestly

RatingWhat it certifiesWhat it means on a food line
IP65Dust-tight; protected against low-pressure water jetsWipe-downs, splash zones, foam cleaning nearby — the terminal front survives routine sanitation
IP66/67Stronger jets / temporary immersionWet zones with hose contact, not sustained high-pressure
IP69(K)High-pressure, high-temperature washdownDirect hot-water jet cleaning as part of the sanitation protocol

The critical honesty: most "IP65 panel PCs" — including our standard ITPC industrial range — are rated IP65 on the front panel only. Correctly flush-mounted in a sealed cabinet or enclosure wall, that is exactly right for dry and splash areas. It is not a washdown rating for the whole unit.

Mapping zones to hardware

  • Dry-side stations (packing, warehouse, QA office) — standard fanless panel PC; IP65 front is comfortable margin.
  • Splash and foam zones (line-side, adjacent to cleaning) — IP65-front panel PC flush-mounted in a sealed stainless enclosure, with attention to gasket quality and gland sealing.
  • True washdown zones (direct jet cleaning) — a fully sealed IP69-class unit in stainless steel 316, specified as such end-to-end: enclosure, connectors, and cable entries all rated. This is a project-specific configuration — raise it explicitly in the enquiry.

Beyond ingress: what food plants should also spec

  • Glove-compatible PCAP touch — operators wear gloves; the capacitive screens must be calibrated for them.
  • Chemical-tolerant fronts — sanitation chemistry is harsher than office cleaner; confirm compatibility with your protocol.
  • Fanless construction — a fan is an air path for humid, particle-laden air; passive cooling closes it.
  • Wide-range DC power with protection — line power is noisy; 9–36V input with transient protection (ITPC-C class) rides it out.
  • Serial + dual LAN — scales talk RS-232; the terminal bridges the machine network and the ERP VLAN.

Send the zone map, sanitation protocol, and software stack — we will propose the terminal set, including washdown-rated options where required.
